Community DLC
A new Baldur’s Gate 3 mod is in the works—Act Two Expansion—designed to fill the gap between Acts Two and Three.
It’s not made by Larian Studios, but by a solo modder who goes by the name SquallyDaBeanz—a modder with time, a goal, a vision, and the capabilities to back it all up.
And judging by what we’ve seen so far, he’s pulling this ambitious project off.
Act Two Expansion
The custom campaign adds an entirely new region that fits between Act 2 and Act 3, complete with new monsters, items, lore, and environments—even with multiplayer support.
“The mod takes place after leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands but before reaching Baldur’s Gate. With the Army of the Absolute on the march, Tav and the gang must find a way to cross the Chionthar River before taking part in an epic battle against the Absolute’s army at Rivington,” SquallyDaBeanz explained on Reddit.
Version 1.0 is planned for release by the end of 2025—nearly two years after the game’s original launch.
The fact that people are still building this kind of content for BG3—and doing it on this scale—is honestly amazing. Especially with the uncertainty around the future of the game, now that Larian Studios is moving on to other projects.
If you would like to support SquallyDaBeanzs work, you can:
Community Is Keeping the Eternal Flame Alive
What stands out to me isn’t just the scale of the mod or the quality shown in the trailer. It’s that people care enough about this game to keep working on it. Even when it’s unclear what the future of the Baldur’s Gate IP looks like.
Personally, I could easily see myself returning to BG3 for years—if there’s new content. And the modding community is key to that. New content is what keeps the fire burning.
Since Larian has made it clear that there won’t be any official expansions after Patch 8, it feels like the torch has been passed to the community. Larian built something massive, and now they’re stepping back. But the engine, the systems—it all still has so much untapped potential. And now, it’s in the modders’ hands.
I’m genuinely grateful that Larian enabled mod support to the extent they have. That one decision gives the community the tools to keep BG3 alive in new ways. It’s a good-guy move in an industry where many studios lock down their IPs and toolsets.
People are still playing the original Baldur’s Gate games more than two decades later. So the idea that BG3 could become a modern classic with a long life doesn’t feel far-fetched. If mods like this keep coming, it very well might.

Conclusion
When it became clear that Larian wasn’t going beyond Patch 8, I was hoping to see exactly this kind of thing—mods that add meaningful content to the base game.
Of course, expecting a small team—or in this case, a single modder—to deliver something on the same level as the main campaign isn’t realistic. Corners will have to be cut just to get something out there. But that’s okay.
I’m impressed by the apparent depth and scale of the Act Two Expansion. If this is possible from just one person (or a small team), then I’ve got high hopes for the future of BG3 mods.
If this modding community can pull off projects like Act Two Expansion, then the future of BG3 mods looks promising—even without official expansions.
