A Lynchian Metroidvania: Silver Pines
When the leaves change color and fall from the trees, and you start to get that faint smell of decay mixed with the crisp autumn air, something shifts in me. It makes me crave dark, deep and atmospheric content.
This autumn, I’ve rewatched season 3 of Twin Peaks and find myself eagerly exploring other forms of culture that match this eerie, Lynchian atmosphere.
Visit Silver Pines
Silver Pines, an upcoming 2D horror adventure from developer Wych Elm (and publisher Team17), might hit that Lynchian note and channel the same kind of energy—albeit with the grotesqueness dialed up several notches.
Silver Pines is looking very atmospheric / Credit Team17
The game is a side-scrolling horror metroidvania that pays homage to both classic platformers and Lynch’s storytelling. Its eerie pixel-art world hides secrets beneath a peaceful surface: strange townsfolk, flickering lights, and that creeping sense that something is fundamentally wrong.
References
By the looks of it, Silver Pines draws from the emotional and visual language of Twin Peaks and Silent Hill. Two clear references for anyone who loves psychological horror wrapped in style and symbolism.
The setting is a small logging town plagued by disappearances and disturbing visions. You play as a local investigating the disapreance of a musician called Eddie Velvet.
Both “Eddie” and “Velvet” can be seen as references to Twin Peaks or Lynchs overall universe, with Big Ed and Lynch’s usage and fascination of velvet (both Blue and Red).
I’m drawn to how it looks and sounds. The combination of old-school pixel art and cinematic horror direction seems very promising.
If the atmosphere and storytelling land, Silver Pines could scratch my ever present Lynchian itch.
Release date
The game is scheduled for release some time in 2026, on all plattforms. No further specifics announced at the time of wirting.
It’s already on my Steam wishlist and I can’t wait to see more.
